From the artists website: "Julie Fucking Potter is a ball of sunshine and she will blind you with her beautiful comic glow. Julie was put on the planet to make you laugh, so take advantage of God's gift. She will make you moan with delight the second she steps on stage. Whether it's improv, stand-up, or rap, you will get the bang you so desire for your buck."
Given the impress hip-hop has had on culture internationally, the interventions lyrically and politically of a bunch of queer Negroes is bound to have ripple effects. The point is that D/DC represents a "coming out" in hip-hop about what some of us have known for a long time: that any black cultural Renaissance needs fags. The anti-gangster aesthetic of quasi-Nationalist "conscious" hip-hoppers and bohemian MC thrift shoppers pave a space for D/DC to articulate its word play. They represent a political lyricism that does not take itself too seriously. Overstand? It's not that deep Deep Dickollective's ubiquitous group and solo projects over the past six years have been crucial to the development and international perception of the growing community of out queer hip hop artists. Winners of the "Best Hip Hop Group" award in the SF Bay Guardian 2003 readers poll, their third CD "The Famous Outlaw League Of Proto-Negroes" was named to Out Magazine's Top 10 Gay Albums of 2004 and was a 2005 Outmusic Award double nominee. Their fifth disc "On Some Other" will be released in late 2006. |
